Liberty in the Modern World

During the raid at Harper's Ferry, John Brown had three main goals mind. First, he wanted to raid the arsenal located at Harper's Ferry. Brown then needed to use the weapons in the arsenal to arm his slave-soldiers. Lastly, abolitionist John Brown wanted to begin a slave rebellion that would end slavery forever. John Brown was captured, which meant that no slave rebellion actually took place.
This event occurred mainly because of John Brown's want for liberty. He wanted there to be no use of slavery because he thought that it was cruel and unjust. John Brown believed that he was fulfilling God's will by eliminating slavery. Liberty persuaded John Brown to raid Harper's Ferry. |
Liberty also plays a big role in today's society. In April, 2014, a second grade student in Texas was reading the Bible during an independent 'read to myself time' when a teacher from Hamilton Elementary school took it away from her. The teacher told the student that she is not permitted to read or even bring the Bible to school. There are certain to be many opposing opinions on whether this action by the teacher was appropriate or not.
This event was so controversial that the girl's family reached out to the Liberty Institute, which specializes in religious freedom cases. According to them, it is okay for the child to bring the Bible to school. Michael Berry, senior counsel at Liberty Institute, pointed out that the school's library even has copies of the Bible. A battle over whether or not a Bible is appropriate for school heavily deals with religious liberty due to one's freedom. |
