Indiana During the Civil War
On April 12th, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for the help of 75,000 men to defend the Union. More than 19,700 Hoosiers volunteered. Indiana was ranked second in the Union in providing men for the military. In addition, another 100,000 men were enrolled in the Indiana Militia.
60% of the Indiana Regiment was trained and prepared for battle in Indiana's capitol, Indianapolis. Indiana also maintained an arsenal in the state capitol. The arsenal held back up supplies for the Union Army. More than 35% of the volunteers from Indiana who joined the Union army died. |
